Automating SQL Server Service Pack / Patch / Hot fix apply

In one of my task I have to apply the latest SQL Server Service Pack /
Patch / Hot fix on all the SQL Server Boxes in our client environment. There
are more than 400 SQL Server boxes with SQL Server version 6.5, 7.0 and 2000
running on Window NT, 2000 and 2003 Platforms. We have been given deadline of
one month to apply the SQL Server patches access all the box.
It is also being advised to rollout this task Quarterly on every year
as the Service pack / Patch are being released.
Hereby I am looking for some advise on
1. The best process to follow on for this task:
2. Automating this task:
Is anyone used any third party tools like "Opsware" to automate this
process?
3. Issues and Risks:
Issues and Risks which to be faced as part of this task .
4. Misc:
Any sort of information that would help with this task.

Have you considered Microsoft Systems Managment Server. It's really designed
just for change and configuration management. It's a great tool for applying
service packs & hotfixes accross the enterprise.

Automatics restore script

I am setting up a job to automatically restore the standby database.
This is to test our tape backups. I need to passon the latest full
backup and log file names to the tape system to extract the files. How
do I get the file names? I would like to store these file names in temp
table and pass on to tape system one by one to extract it to local
disk. Do I need to query the msdb of primary or backup directory?
Please suggest sql to achieve this.

If you do SQL Backups then you shouldn't need to know the file names because
the backup is referenced by database name. Are you doing file system
backups? That's not recommended unless you detach the database first.
Query the sysfiles system table for the physical file names.

If it is 3rd party, ask the 3rd party vendor how you can script a restore
using their command line tools.
If SQL Server did not back the data up itself (to disk or a backup device
that it can control) it can't get the data back for you by itself.

automatically compress backups

I have a maintenance plan for handling backups. I need to be able to amend the jobs so that the latest backup can be compressed (e.g. command line compression utility) before it is copied off across the network to a DR machine.

The issue is that the Maintenance Plan produces data/time specific backup file names - mulitiple backups stored in the same directory. Therefore, within a job step, I'm finding it difficult to code it such that only the latest backup is compressed. The command line syntax of these compression utilities is somewhat limited...

e.g. wzzip zipname.zip dbbackup_*.bak

nb. The '*' represents the wild card for the date/time part of the backup files created by the maintenance plan.

The problem is that the above command would keep adding multiple backups to the same zip archive. What I want is to simply add only the latest backup to the archive but to achieve this I would have to know the name of the backup file (created by the maintenance plan) programatically within the job.

I would have thought this was a fairly common requirement/problem. Has anyone got some suggestions/solutions?

A1 I doubt you'll like hearing this, my suggestion is don't compress production backups if you can possibly avoid it in any production setting (especially certain kinds of software based compression).

I've seen too many failed validation restores that seem to have only the fact of having been compressed and decompressed in common to heavily rely on any compression of backup dumps. (Granted, it does work 'most' of the time, which is generally fine for many development environments. However, in some situations where compression is implemented with larger backups I've seen routine daily restore validations fail or restore with problems every few weeks.)

If you are intent on going ahead anyway, what Sql Server version you are running is important. (In 2k installs I've implemented UDF functions instead of stored procedures for extracting dump information.)

Unfortunately no version has provided particularly rich built in backup / maintenence procedures to address the information needs you would require. (There are lots of undocumented ones that are worth looking at, but they are as subject to unannounced changes as the underlying MSDB table structures. I think you may be stuck implementing and maintaining your own special functions / stored procedures). Current Maintenance Plan Procedures (ver 7 / 2k) include:
sp_add_maintenance_plan
sp_add_maintenance_plan_db
sp_add_maintenance_plan_job
sp_delete_maintenance_plan
sp_delete_maintenance_plan_db
sp_delete_maintenance_plan_job

space between each row, is there some way to remove the space?

>|||I would do this using a DTS package or using BCP.
For example, let's go with a DTS package:
In the package, you will add an SQL Server source, and flat file destination
connections. You add a data pump task that connects these two connections,
and pumps out your query results to the flat file.
Then the next step will send an email by specifying the file name as the
attachment.
For sending emails, I use xp_smtp_sendmail, which is a free download from
http://sqldev.net
You could also use SQL Mail. See SQL Server Books Online for more
information.
if you are not familiar with DTS, start with Books Online, and play around
with it from the DTS designer in Enterprise manager. For DTS info, checkout
sqldts.com.

If u wanted to transfer all data to a text file then use bcp utility
ex:
exec master..xp_cmdshell 'bcp epinav.dbo.dlvmode out
D:\scriptrecordtable\dlvmode.bcp -n -"EPIOLAPP428G" -U -P'
epiolapp428g is the servername
for more help read books online just type BCP
if u wanted selected data then create a view and tranfer data from
view.

to copy data from text file to ur sql table
use this

I started playing around with DTS and was able to setup a query and save the
info to a text file, but now I have 2 more question.
The information is saved in the text file row by row, BUT it is inserting a
space between each row, is there some way to remove the space?
Also, when a record is submitted it has to follow a YYYYMMDD format so I
placed a hidden text field in the form like this one:
<input name="source_date" type="hidden" id="source_date" value="<%
response.write YEAR(Date()) & _
Pd(Month(date()),2) & _
Pd(DAY(date()),2)
%>">
I am having some trouble in the query that runs in DTS to automatically
capture today's date and use it in the WHERE clause:
where [request_info_form].[source_date]='20050113'
Can you guys help me think of a way?
